Change Management Method: ADKAR

One of the most widely used change management models is the ADKAR model, developed by Prosci, a leading research and consulting firm in the field of change management. McCoy's Change Management team has integrated the ADKAR methodology within the Change Management toolkit. Together with SAP Activate, they form the core of our Change Management approach.

The ADKAR model describes the five essential components necessary for individual change: Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, and Reinforcement.

Why use the ADKAR model for SAP implementations?

The ADKAR model enables organizations to address the human side of change. During the implementation of SAP S/4HANA, SAP Ariba, or any other digital transformation, the human aspect is often overlooked. However, change is only as good as its adoption, which is why it is essential to differentiate between various stakeholder groups in the change approach. The ADKAR model assists organizations in navigating this human side of change and can be useful in the following ways during digital transformations:

Assess the readiness for change

With the ADKAR model, you can assess the willingness and ability of individuals or groups of stakeholders to adapt to changes. It helps identify potential gaps in understanding between the current state (as-is) and the desired future state (to-be). ADKAR scores lower than 3.0 can be a barrier point and should be closely managed.

Identify phases that require immediate action

By dividing the change into five different phases (Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, and Reinforcement), the ADKAR model helps organizations identify specific areas that require additional attention. This enables a more targeted and effective change management strategy. For example, a score of 2.2 on Awareness indicates that stakeholders are not sufficiently informed about the upcoming change. To increase the level of awareness, tailored communication is needed, emphasizing the project benefits such as improved efficiency and collaboration.

Tracking progress

The AKDAR model shows that individuals or groups of stakeholders may not progress through the change process at the same pace. It helps to understand in which phase individuals or groups of stakeholders are, and what specific actions or interventions are needed to move them forward.
