3 indispensable tools for Data Migration in SAP projects

Loading data... It is a common task that you have as a Data Migration Consultant. Over the past few years, I have worked with multiple tools as a data migration consultant and have experienced the pros and cons of each. One thing I know for sure: using the right tool can make your work much easier. In this blog, I will dive deeper into 3 tools that have positively changed my work as a data migration consultant, so you too can load your data super fast.

LSMW

LSMW is a tool for transferring data from non-SAP systems ("Legacy Systems") to SAP R/3 systems. The data can be imported into the SAP R/3 system through various methods (Standard Batch/Direct Input, Batch Input Recording, BAPIs, or IDocs). Creating an LSMW script takes time and requires a fairly high level of technical knowledge. LSMW is designed to load data into SAP R/3 but can also be used to modify data. LSMW is also available on S/4 HANA systems.

In the image below, you can see the key features.

Winshuttle

Winshuttle is an external tool that allows you to log into any SAP system. Data loading with Winshuttle occurs in three steps. The first step is recording a specific transaction, the second step is specifying which fields you want to use in which order, known as "mapping." The third step is running the script. In this step, data from an Excel file is read and loaded into SAP. After completion, Winshuttle displays the result for each line.

LTMC

LTMC is a web-based tool designed for customers who want to transfer their business data from SAP or non-SAP systems. It is part of both SAP S/4HANA and SAP S/4HANA Private and Public Cloud and is launched through the "Migrate Your Data" app in the Fiori Launchpad (Data Migration Launchpad). It uses migration objects, and for many objects, an Excel template is available that can be filled in. In LTMC, values can also be mapped. For example, an old supplier number 123 can be mapped to a new supplier number 456. This way, you can put the old values in your load file, and they will automatically be converted to the new values.

Which tool should I use?

As mentioned, each system has its pros and cons. The best tool for you depends on your own knowledge and experience. Would you like to receive personal advice? Contact Timothy de Windt (timothy.de.windt@mccoy-partners.com).
