From transactions to prompts: how AI is reshaping SAP

What if just one prompt was enough to:

  • Create or update a sales order or any other transaction data

  • Create or update masterdata, organizational structures, etc

  • Generate on the fly (graphical) overviews based on any data request

About a year ago, I started exploring what AI would mean for my work as an SAP developer.
I looked at how tech giants and SAP itself are investing in AI and started rethinking on our interaction with SAP, without the constraints of how we work today. Here are just a few topics that could easily be taken over by AI:

  • Adding custom fields to business contexts

  • Implementing logic in BAdIs

  • Generating custom business objects

At the time I thought: this will be possible one day, but it will take years before it becomes reality for me. Looking at where we are today, that assumption didn’t hold. Technology is moving fast and SAP is fully committed to AI, with significant progress in just one year.

AI is not just a tool. It is changing how we work

AI is fundamentally changing how we interact with systems like SAP and that shift is happening fast.

In my own work, I have already seen what this looks like in practice. Using SAP Joule, I have been able to create transaction data and consume custom RAP services, also on older S/4HANA systems.
Generate and adapt CAP applications on SAP BTP is also simplified with the help of AI.

And AI is rapidly accelerating the possibilities in the very near future.
Key user extensions, like creating custom fields and logic or building low-code solutions with SAP Build Apps, will be replaced by a conversational process in AI.
And in case an AI-agent does not fully cover the requirements, these agents can be enhanced with custom logic.

At the same time, the way we interact with SAP is shifting.
SAP Joule will be the main interface for business users to interact with SAP. This enables a move away from traditional user interfaces towards a more intuitive, conversational way of working.

This shift is already happening

Not convinced yet? Recent developments clearly show the direction SAP is moving in:

  • AI vision from Jonathan von Rüden, demonstrating how AI is embedded into SAP systems, including generating applications on the fly and using agents to handle business processes

  • A partnership with n8n to extend Joule’s agentic capabilities, enabling the creation of custom AI-agents

  • The deprecation of SAP Build Apps, signaling a shift away from traditional low-code approaches as AI-driven development becomes more viable

How McCoy makes the difference in an AI-driven SAP-landscape

At McCoy, we fully embrace this rapidly changing future. AI is not just transforming technology, it is also reshaping how SAP-consultants, developers, functional experts, and business users operate in their daily work.

What does not change, however, is the need to implement specific business requirements. Every organization is still looking for ways to create and sustain a competitive advantage.

That is where McCoy makes the difference. We help organizations translate these requirements into the right solutions, whether that means fine-tuning SAP agents to align with business needs or building pro-code solutions on SAP BTP for scenarios that AI cannot yet deliver.

The question is not if this shift will happen, but how fast your organization is ready to adapt. Do you want to know more? Feel free to contact us.
