SAP IBP 2608: What’s New in AI, Joule & Supply Planning

SAP IBP 2608 introduces new AI-powered planning capabilities with Joule, alongside important enhancements to supply, inventory and transportation planning. Key updates include AI-assisted scenario planning, Lead Time Intelligence, scheduling agreement integration in RTI, and harmonized scenarios for Transportation Load Building.

With the SAP IBP 2608 release hitting production systems this weekend, we at McCoy have gone through the release notes to identify the changes that will matter most for companies and their planners. The release continues SAP’s move towards AI-based planning, while also introducing several valuable non-AI capabilities.

In this blog, we highlight the most relevant SAP IBP 2608 updates and what they could mean for your planning processes.

AI-Powered Planning with Joule:

  • AI-assisted scenario planning is coming to IBP, powered by Joule. Rather than manually building out a scenario step by step, planners can simply prompt IBP with the scenario they want to explore. Ask something like "what happens if our plant goes offline for a week?" or, when facing a stockout, ask: "what stock transfer orders could prevent our customer shortages?" Then Joule builds the scenario, runs the what-if, and provides concrete options such as alternative vendors or internal stock transfers you can act on immediately.

  • Lead Time Intelligence, also built on Joule, is now integrated in the IBP inventory module. Instead of manually gathering the right data and calculating and comparing trends, Joule flags the relevant shifts itself and generates proposals, ready for the planner to review, approve, or reject. These proposals include recommendations for master data updates and their downstream effects.

What else is new in SAP IBP?

  • RTI now includes the integration of scheduling agreements, bringing long-term supplier commitments directly into SAP IBP. With this long-awaited functionality, IBP can seamlessly take contractually agreed quantities and delivery dates into account, giving planners a more complete view of upcoming supply.

  • With the focus on harmonized planning, harmonized scenarios are now extended to Transportation Load Building, allowing planners to test different transportation plans, optimize load quantities and scheduling, and promote the preferred solution when ready.

These new enhancements help companies using SAP IBP take the next step towards AI-based planning.
